STUDIO TOUR PROMISES FINE ART
FOR PUBLIC VIEWING

Summer Petunias

Summer Petunias, oil by John Mlacak

SOME ARTISTS paint in the warm atmosphere inside the studio and others disappear off to paint in the great outdoors. Others travel in their other work and paint or draw as they go. This is also true of the artists in the Kanata Artists Studio Tour.

Allison Fagan, Catherine Edmonds, Ted Duncan and Tony Cresswell-Jones can be found indoors. John Mlacak spends his weekend painting in the Gatineau and Susan Goold will be found in the spring woods or summer gardens. Brian Kelly travels and paints all across Canada while Rosemary Randell will often be painting in Europe or Scotland. But on the first weekend in May all these artists can be found in their Kanata studios eager to show you their new work. Come out and visit the artists at the Ninth Annual Kanata Artists Studio Tour.

A studio tour is an open house for art. Just watch the local paper for a map or pick up a flyer with map from any of the artists and then set out for a day of art and adventure. At each studio you will be able to meet the artists, take a look at the studio and see where and how the works are created. On view will be many of the artists creations including those special “collection of the artist” pieces that are not usually seen in public. Many of the pieces are for sale so that you can take home a treasure for your own collection.

This year the Kanata Artists Studio Tour will, as usual, be held on the first weekend in May. The studios are open Friday, May 5 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and on Saturday and Sunday, May 6 and 7 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. A brochure with a studio location map for this free tour is available from the artists, or from the Chapters book store in the Kanata Centrum Shopping Centre, 400 Earl Grey Drive, Kanata.

KANATA ARTISTS’ STUDIO TOUR

In October last year, John Mlacak spent a week in Quebec City capturing the wonderful, historic streetscapes on canvas.  John loved the steep, winding, cobblestone roads and the old buildings framed against brilliant fall colors.

A unique opportunity to visit and paint on Nantucket Island was another highlight for John last September.  Impressionistic oils of oceanside patio weddings at a nearby inn were purchased as gifts for the newlyweds.  Lighthouses, the endless ocean and charming New England cottages with weathered shingles enhanced by beautiful gardens provided ample subject matter.

In order to meet the demand for his oil miniatures, John has just completed a new series and will show them for the first time at the Studio Tour.  These gems have travelled all over the world as personal treasures and gifts.

John will also be showing new larger canvases of waterfalls in Gatineau, gardens in Vermont and ateliers and canals in rural France.  The use of brilliant, rich colors are shown to full advantage in these paintings.  John selected a landscape of Blois in the Loire Valley region of France for the Studio Tour’s second Preview Show at Chapter’s in Kanata Centrum which continues until April 26.

John has become increasingly involved in fundraising for charitable and other organizations including the Ottawa Jazz Festival, SOS Childerns Villages Canada, Big Brothers of Ottawa-Carleton, the Kanata Techniques, Canadian Advanced Technology Association (Stroke), and An Evening With Abigail (Breast Cancer) to name a few.

John’s art can be seen at his home studio and gallery by appointment.  He is a founding member of the Kanata Civic Art Gallery and has shown his work there since it opened in 1992.  His paintings can be seen at the Foyer Gallery in Nepean, Galerie Old Chelsea and at Galerie Echo Diffusart.  You can visit John’s web site:  www.igs.net/~mlacak/

John looks forward to seeing his neighbors and friends once again and all his new visitors.  Mark May 5, 6 and 7 on the calendar and remember to take the Tour.

John Mlacak
Artist produces contrasts of large oils and miniatures

Kanata Artists’ Studio Tour

This year John Mlacak has developed a great deal of his time creating large oil landscapes depicting waterfalls, streams, porch and patio flower gardens, and autumn woodlands shrouded in their first snow.

He has used rich, vibrant contrasts of colour to capture some of the grandeur of our natural setting.  Mlacak is eager to show you these new paintings as well as his very popular miniatures during this year’s Studio Tour.

Mlacak is particularly pleased that Chapters in Kanata Centrum is featuring the work of the Studio Tour artists during the month of April.

Interested shoppers will be able to purchase art resource books which Chapters ordered from a list compiled by the “Tour” artists.  Brochures will be available in the store and some of the artists will be giving demonstrations and entertaining in the fireplace area.

Mlacak is an award-winning artist and his work can be seen at his home gallery and studio by appointment.  He also displays at regional galleries and art festivals throughout the year.  After the Studio Tour, he has a solo show at the Atrium Gallery in Nepean – June 4 to July 21.

Visit Mlacak’s web site:  www.igs.net/~mlacak/ to preview 50 to 70 paintings, many of which will be available for the Studio Tour.

John Mlacak is a full-time artist and has lived in Kanata since 1965.  He has participated in the Kanata Artists’ Studio Tour since its inception in 1992 and looks forward to opening his home and studio to you on April 30, May 1 and 2.  Remember to take the tour.

JOHN MLACAK
From rural Kanata to parts of Quebec

Studio Tour

At the recent Ottawa Spring Home Show, award-winning artist John Mlacak was caught napping while his wife, Beth, tended his art display. Even artists need to rest while awaiting new inspiration.

This Saturday and Sunday will find Mlacak exhibiting his oil paintings at the National Capital Fine Arts Festival, Lansdowne Park. In preparation for the 7th Kanata Artists’ Studio Tour, Mlacak has painted his way across rural Kanata as well as the Petite Riviere Rouge, l’Estrie and Gatineau areas of Quebec.

Mlacak’s passion for painting en plein air and his love of bold, dramatic colors, contin ue to absorb his attention. His “First Snow Series” features rural Kanata and West Carleton during the first snowfall last October when the trees still held their autumn bril liance. These painting capture the yellows, oranges and reds against the warm light and cool shadows created by the heavy, new snow. Mlacak’s landscapes are available in miniature to traditional sizes.

Mlacak has participated in the Kanata Artists’ Studio Tour since its inception in 1992.
